San Jose’s, The Trims, have been doing the change thing–expanding their sound, easing into a different approach to things. Holding down bass duties, David Ovlite is new too. The new move stems from a quest for freshness in line with the act’s most recent incarnation.
But thankfully The Trims’ new single gives us a showcased view of their new member. “I Wish I Could Say” carries on with the self-deprecating themes that The Trims so oft exploit, softening their frantic, paranoid approach for a more pop-sensible cantation. The track has an almost surf-rock feel harkening back to the origins of pre-Beatles, American, pop-rock.
Interestingly enough, the style seems to pay homage to the mid-century stars of rock ‘n’ roll, a time when Chicano rock ruled the airwaves. The guitars are stripped, the bassline is more soulful and vocals inhabit a higher register reminiscent of The Champs, Ritchie Valens, Sunny and the Sunglows and the like.
The video follows in suit, providing a straight performance short. Area video artist, Logan Parks, and will be available on The Trims Youtube page, on CMC TV (California Music Channel–Channel 28.3 on digital cable), on the cmctv app, at CMC-TV.com, and Comcast on demand under the Xfinity services “get local.”
